| Abstract | This study was made in two phases. Phase I was conducted to obtain extensive information about "The Wall Street Journal's" subscribers on their business activities, purchasing influence, involvement in pollution control, personal resources, etc. Those personally active in anti-pollution programs received a second survey dealing with environmental protection. The majority of respondents agreed that government should play an extensive role in the solution of environmental and pollution control problems. Of respondents in business and industry, 69 percent reported that anti-pollution or related problems presently affected their company or are likely to do so in the future. Of the respondents in firms with environmental problems, 30 percent reported that primary responsibility for anti-pollution efforts was handled on the corporate level, compared with 45 percent who said the responsibility rests with plant management; one out of four said their company manufactures or provides anti-pollution products or services to others; and 57 percent stated that their job function was in the environmental protection field.
