| Abstract | The characteristics and differences between the various approaches to utilizing environmental themes and issues in college physics classes are reviewed in this paper. These physics courses are grouped into three categories: introductory level, upper level, and seminars. The upper level courses generally involve the application of rather sophisticated physics and mathematics to the understanding of environmental problems. Two categories of introductory level courses are recognized: one kind attempts to familiarize students with current environmental problems as its main goal and the other has goals more closely related to traditional physics, with the understanding of environmental problems being secondary. Examples of these approaches are described, including the author's course,"Energy and the Environment," at the University of Maryland. A short bibliographic resource list useful to prospective course designers is provided. (PR) |
