Abstract | The use of total communication in educating deaf preschool and elementary school students in the Santa Ana Program for the Hearing Impaired, Orange County, California, is described. Total communication is explained to consist of auditory training, speech, speechreading, fingerspelling, and the language of signs. Aspects of the program described are parent preparation and instruction in total communication, the large number of visitors to the school, the most common question asked by visitors, activities over the last 3 years involving both hearing and hearing impaired children, achievement tests, teacher reaction to total communication, reaction of parents of hearing children involved in the program, psychological reactions of hearing impaired children to total communication, and the principal's observations on the program. The program is thought to be highly successful by all those involved. (CB) |
