| Abstract | The effect of lecture-demonstrations and workshops on changing elementary school children's attitudes toward drama (acting), music, dance and opera is the focus of this experimental report. Three self-report interest scales and a peer interest rating were administered in a pretest post-test format. The results indicated only slight attitude change as an effect of the teaching techniques employed in this program. Generally, the workshops seemed to produce more favorable attitudes than lectures; however, having both lectures and workshops together was less effective than either alone. Moreover, initial reactions as well as attitude change were more favorable toward acting than any other performing art. The author suggests that acting and workshops produce more favorable responses because of the direct physical and emotional involvement inherent in the two forms. Several suggestions are included for adapting acting and workshop procedure for classroom use to "personalize" lessons. (CF) |
