Abstract | The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of inservice training in individual reading conferences and interaction analysis on the individual reading conferences conducted by elementary school teachers in the intermediate grades. Fourteen public school teachers were divided into an experimental and control group. The experimental group received training in interaction analysis and in utilizing the individual reading conference. Pre and post audio tape recordings were obtained from each group and a followup tape was obtained from the experimental group three months after the posttape. Teachers in the experimental group: (1) became more accepting of the student's feelings and ideas, (2) used more indirect influence, (3) placed less emphasis upon the content of materials read, (4) used less teacher-directed talk and more student-initiated talk, (5) more use of the individual reading conference as an intimate sharing period, and gave more attention to planning followup activities. No significant differences were found between experimental and control groups in the amount of teacher talk, the use of praise, or the amount of student oral language expression. (Author/WR) |
