AbstractThis report is an investigation of the validity of the conclusions reached in the first phase of this study (see JC 720 106 above). Three questionnaires were designed to collect information on the attitudes, backgrounds, and opinions of: (1) faculty in the mathematics, science and engineering-related occupational divisions of selected Illinois junior colleges; (2) students in transfer and engineering-related occupational programs in these same colleges; and (3) faculty in selected technical institutes. Conclusions reached from the results of these questionnaires include indications that transfer and engineering-related occupational instructors differ in their educational background, the number of advanced degrees held, their evaluation of the importance of application in technical physics courses, and their opinion of the ability and motivation of occupational students. Differences were also found between transfer and engineering-related occupational students. A greater proportion of the transfer students hope to obtain education beyond the Associate degree; their attitude toward work is more idealistic as opposed to the pragmatic attitude of the occupational students; they were less sure of their reasons for choosing their program than the occupational students; and their education is more often financed by assistance than by employment.
