| Abstract | This speech suggests some of the weaknesses in current curriculum planning and offers suggestions for its improvement. The speaker argues that current curriculum planning places too much emphasis on subject curriculum. For successful curriculum planning, the author supports these goals: (1) development of the self-directing, continuing learner; (2) active participation by the learner in planning his own curriculum in an open process that eliminates the "hidden curriculum"; (3) progression by the learner along a series of curriculum continuums, each within a curriculum domain rather than up an educational ladder; and (4) development of the school as a management center for curriculum and instruction rather than as a self-contained locus of schooling. The author describes in detail the processes of curriculum planning as they should be, emphasizing the need for cooperation among professionals, citizens, and students. (JF) |
