Abstract | The underlying premise of the University of Hawaii Physical Activities for Preschool curriculum is that important contributions to a positive self-concept are made by motor independence and a realistic body image. Program objectives include: (1) the development of strength, endurance, and flexibility in skills that involve the muscles, cardiovascular and respiratory systems, and skeletal system, (2) the development of perceptual-motor skills, (3) the development of motor skills, (4) the development of certain spatial-temporal-motor concepts, and (5) the development of a positive attitude toward physical activity, toward social interaction, and toward the self. The program consists of a sequence of increasingly complex motor activities, with alternative activities for most objectives to accommodate the varied needs and interests of individual children.
