AbstractThe 11 articles in this document are based upon actual classroom experiences, which draw attention to the fact that the language of failure is created by using other human beings selfishly. The language of success is established by concern, involvement, and love. "The Language of Failure: Retrospect" describes a seminar organized by the British National Association for the Teaching of English (NATE) as a joint British-American endeavor to search for a practical plan of action for the Association to follow on behalf of those in need of, but not yet qualifying for, welfare services. "The Language of Failure" discusses the problems that the disadvantaged meet in the classroom, particularly the problems that stem from negative teacher attitudes. "Language Development in Infants with Reference to Social Deprivation" explores the problems a child has when he is subjected to language deprivation during the early years. "Not All Dull Alike--The Question of Terminology" probes the cultural aspects being economically deprived and subject to social discrimination. Other articles are "A Sanctuary against Fear,""A Hidden Value in Examinations?""Getting Them to Use Their Reading,""Speech and Reading,""Normalized Writing Curriculums? No!,""Bernstein on Compensatory Education," and "English as a Foreign Language: Reflections on a Novel Aspect." (CK)
