Abstract | The first of a six-volume series in an 18-week intensive language training course prepared by the Defense Language Institute contains classroom materials for 10 units of instruction. The course, consisting of 60 lessons and accompanying tape recordings together with an "Introduction to Thai Script" and a "Glossary," is designed to train native English speakers to level 1 proficiency in speaking, understanding, and reading. Basic structural patterns of Thai are introduced with vocabulary that is generally useful for Americans in Thailand. The lessons are structured around dialogues, grammar review, pronunciation and substitution drills, comprehension exercises, vocabulary lists, and response drills. Lessons 1 through 10 concern: (1) greetings, (2) studying Thai, (3) school, (4) Thailand, (5) the country, (6) some questions, (7) introductions, (8) speaking Thai, (9) reading newspapers, and (10) going to Thailand.
