Abstract | This paper discusses life in East Germany as observed by the author during a three-week program of summer courses in Erfurt. Background information includes a description of Erfurt, a brief review of its history, and analysis of the daily life of East Germans--their attitudes towards the state, physical appearance, salary structure, and recreational activities. Of main concern is the state of education. The restructuring of the national school system is described, as well as the nature of several courses of instruction, including handicrafts in the first six school years, apprenticeships and factory work in the regular high schools, and training and competition in specialized schools. State educational policy and the inculcation of work-oriented attitudes are evaluated, as are youth clubs and their summer camps. A political education class is reconstructed in dialogue, and visits to a neighboring village and church, a factory, and farm center are recounted. The paper concludes with an analysis of East German political attitudes and their international significance. (RS) |
