Abstract	This paper traces the evolution of student rights and the judicial protection of these rights through numerous court cases. The author outlines the minimum standards of due process required in disciplinary proceedings and discusses cases that point up (1) the required specificity of rules on student conduct, (2) the requirements of notice to student and parents, (3) the right to a fair hearing, (4) the right to counsel, (5) the right to inspect evidence, (6) the right to have an impartial trier of fact at a hearing, (7) the right to cross-examine and confront witnesses, and (8) the right to protection against self-incrimination. The author recommends that schools provide a grievance procedure for students and faculty and that they establish written regulations on student conduct as well as written procedures for handling discipline cases. He also recommends that schools have emergency plans to deal with school disorders. (JF)
