Abstract	An examination of changing student attitudes and behavior and current foreign language programs leads the author to propose strategies for developing new attitudes toward teaching, curriculum planning, and second language learning. Noting the characteristic unrest of today's youth and the bases for it, a plea is made for teachers and administrators to rethink and redesign educational objectives realistically at all levels. A two-stage language program is proposed in which students would receive: instruction in the nature of language through a contrastive approach, an introduction to another people through language, an experience of being another people, and an experience of communicating with another people. First-year, terminal students would receive the benefit of a humanistic approach to the course as well as gaining insight into the nature of communication, while continuing students would actually begin to learn the target language during the second year with an improved attitude.
