AbstractAs part of a series of studies investigating occupational aspirations, this study explores the relationships between certain types of motivation and the occupational aspirations of black and white female college students. With emphasis on occupations which, by tradition, have been either open or closed to blacks, the design of the study involved three samples of 100 college women from three social settings--white middle class, black middle class, and black working class. Instruments used in the study were the French Test of Insight and the Questionnaire on Vocational Goals of College Students. Analysis of the data collected with these instruments revealed no systematic relationships between motivation indices and aspiration to the above occupations. However, it was noted that whites were more indecisive than the blacks regarding their real occupational goals and their ideal occupational goals. Further, it is suggested that black women are more career-oriented and use the same occupations when responding to questions about their ideal goal as they do when stating their real goal.
