AbstractThe purpose of this study is threefold: to examine and synthesize the contemporary changes of irrelevancy against secondary education; determine the possible reasons for irrelevancy; and define and demonstrate a possible solution to the problem. The major focus of the study emerges in the definition of a Sense of the Serious approach to the study of literature and its application to works commonly studied in secondary courses in literature. This approach demands a focus on the "whole condition of man" rather than the "partial condition of man" studied under a genteel approach. The Sense of the Serious approach also demands that literature be studied for what it actually discusses and describes. Nineteenth-century American literature most commonly studied in the secondary school is analyzed for its Sense of the Serious characteristics. The Sense of the Serious approach to the study of literature provides the following conclusions: the study of literature can be highly relevant to secondary students, and the nineteenth-century American authors emphasized the same characteristics of human experience which students charge the study of literature with avoiding. The approach can be honest to the experiences described in literature and known by adolescents, and it can educate toward maturity and an understanding of literature. (Author/DB)
