AbstractThis document is a report on an International Working Session on New Teaching Methods for School Mathematics held at Athens, Greece, which was called to discuss developments since the 1959 Royaumont Seminar on "New Thinking in School Mathematics." Chapter I deals with the curriculum and, in addition to talks on specific topics, includes complete outlines of innovative secondary programs from Belgium, Sweden and Denmark. Chapter II, on methods of teaching modern mathematics, includes a talk by Papy on the methods used in the Belgian program mentioned in Chapter I and a talk on "Searching for Patterns" (Beberman). Chapter III contains talks on "Applications of Modern Mathematics Suitable for Use in Teaching Secondary School Mathematics" (Pollak) and "The Teaching of Mathematics as One of the Humanities" (Athen). Chapter IV discusses what mathematics teachers should know and how they can keep up-to-date on new mathematics and new teaching methods. A summary and recommendations of the conference are included in this document, and there are individual reports on progress in curriculum reform in the participating countries. (MM)
