Abstract	This document presents data on the dimensions and severity of the problem of child sex victimization in an effort to arouse community concern for the welfare of these children. Interviews were conducted with 250 families of abused children from New York City. A study was made of the possible damage to mental health and personality development of sexually abused children. Compared were children who had protective social services and those for whom such services were not available. The report includes: (1) the legal classifications of sex crimes, (2) dimensions of the problem (incidence in New York City, characteristics of families, victims, offenders, and disclosure of the offenses), (3) impact of sexual victimization on the child and family, and (4) community response. The core of this project is the presentation of facts demonstrative of the need for legislation and preventive, protective services. (Author/AJ)
