| Abstract | This book assesses the ways in which English children are responding to different environments (particularly urban) in their play. Material is drawn from three complementary approaches: (1) A neighborhood substudy of two contrasting areas, one of which was built within the last five years and the other at the turn of the century. This substudy gives hints of emerging problems with the old as well as with the new. Both mothers and children were surveyed, the demands of the former and the activities of the latter reflecting two contrasting neighborhoods; (2) 152 playgrounds from different local autority areas were surveyed; and (3) existing facilities for children's play in 20 different local authority areas were surveyed, showing the diversity of responsibility for provision. The comparative attractiveness of the playground was examined in terms of how far children will travel to get to a playground, its popularity, the diversity of its equipment, its size and its environmental setting. Other factors examined were children's play needs, facilities, administration and finance. Conclusions are drawn that are of interest to the urban planner, the local authority, teachers and parents.
