| Abstract | The major aim of this study was to examine commonly stated goals of Ph.D. programs, to test some of the different means used to promote selected objectives, including ones related to college teaching, research, and other significant services, and to assess how much progress the University of Minnesota Graduate School had made in these directions during the 1935-1956 period. Ph.D.s granted from all departments during the years 1935-1948 and 1954-1956 were inventoried about their post-doctoral achievements and how they viewed their graduate work in retrospect. The Ph.D. degree was defined in the questionnaire in terms of 30 abilities or skills and the recipients were requested to estimate the extent to which they had attained each of these skills while in graduate school and how useful it had been subsequently. Analyses were also made relating these judgments and type of present employment, graduate school major, and preparation received for college teaching. Special attention was given to the subsequent careers and reactions of persons who participated in the Ford Fund College Teaching internship program in the mid-fifties. Comparisons were also made between the responses given by Ph.D.s in a study conducted in 1949 and those given in a 1965 study. (Author/AF) |
