AbstractThe Florida Title III Consortium was funded by the Office of Education to initiate a training and research project for the "Preparation, Implementation, and Evaluation of a Learner Centered Humanistic Approach to Curriculum and Instruction. This paper presents the highlights of this approach, including: (1) the involvement of the governing board and university and college administration in the project, as these are the two bodies most responsible for establishing a climate of learning at an institution; (2) creating the desired learning environment for a particular learning experience; (3) the provision for realization of a self-concept for students and faculty; (4) an open-ended calendar or modular calendar for learning; and (5) a nonpunitive philosophy for learning, primarily as expressed by the grading system. The elements of the systems approach to the learning process include: (1) the development of a rationale for the existence of a course; (2) the specification of short- and long-range objectives for learning activities; (3) the pre-evaluation of the learner; (4) the use of a variety of instructional strategies for the learning activities; and (5) the postevaluation of learning activities. Charts illustrating the various aspects of the humanistic approach conclude the paper. (AF)
