AbstractThis list is reprinted from "Education of the Disadvantaged Children" (ED 011 898). Originally compiled as of July 1, 1966, it was updated through August 15, 1966. This list includes books which: (1) have survived a nongovernmental, critical reviewing process, (2) are satisfying to basic needs of childhood, (3) are concerned with the specific problems of children defined as disadvantaged, and (4) may help advantaged children relate to disadvantaged children. The books are listed under various categories. Of these, fantasy, folklore, and poetry and rhymes may depend largely on an adult for skillful introduction. Folklore has been selected for its relationship to the diverse cultures inherited by some American children. In the category of biography and history are listed books which can provide a positive image and which may help establish a time concept for children who know only a meager present. Books listed in the categories of intercultural understanding, rural life, and urban life can help relate children of specialized backgrounds to other children. Other categories include arts and hobbies, beginning science, and "meeting trouble." Several books are listed as paperback books for children. Each book is annotated and rated for grade level.
