Abstract | This topical paper on reading center facilities is part of a series on reading programs in junior colleges. A center is described as a facility used by students, individually or in groups, to develop academic skills and learning through the important element of self-teaching. It is recommended that a center include grouping of learning materials, catalogs, location and direction signs, staff, and students. A satisfactory physical environment or atmosphere is stressed. It is felt that an overall learning center should be the core of a campus. The range in equipment, size, location, and use of space for a center is discussed. Information was gathered from visits to centers at various colleges, surveys, and a study of journal and research articles. (CA) |
