Abstract | The purpose of this dissertation is twofold: (1) to provide a secondary school literature textbook suitable for use in an 8- or 10-week period, all of whose selections share the theme of sports; and (2) to provide a three part rationale for such a textbook--the first part discussing the evolution, uses, and potential of the thematic unit as a teaching method; the second part examining student interest in the theme of sports; and the third part investigating creative artists' interest in and use of this theme. In the textbook section, 47 selections representing 12 sports provide for an investigation of all five major literary forms--the essay, the poem, the short story, the novel, and drama. Introductions to all five genres and questions on each selection are included along with biographical information on the writers whose works appear in the dissertation, a list of terms important to the study of literature, and suggestions for short writing assignments, for comparative writing projects, and for further reading.
