AbstractThe School Library Manpower Project is a five-year study to redefine the concept of school librarianship and to develop an educational program geared to a new concept. Designed in two major phases, the project is concerned with the task and job analyses of school library media positions, education for school librarianship and recruitment from specific manpower pools. Occupational definitions are provided for the School Library Media Specialist, Head of a School Library Media Center, District School Library Media Director, and the School Library Media Technician. The definitions include the major roles and responsibilities of the positions and relate to the background, knowledges, skills and aptitudes deemed essential for the performance of these special tasks. Objectives for new directions in curriculum development and recommendations for change in educational methodology are also provided. Three regional conferences seek reactions to the occupational definitions and examine the work of previous committees for their implications to the future educational patterns for school librarianship. Recommendations from the regional conferences have assisted in setting the direction for the development of the six experimental library education programs in Phase II. (A related document, "School Library Personnel, Task Analysis Survey Report" is available as ED 033 739). (MF)
