Abstract | For use by junior and senior high school English teachers and students in search of appropriate subjects for written compositions, this publication contains 1,237 topics compiled from a questionnaire sent to about 250 teachers. The topics are divided into categories: personal reminiscences, personal reactions, the familiar essay, description, processes, argumentative exposition, comparison and contrast, persuasive exposition, character sketch (types and individuals), fantasy, sports, the news, science, the arts and entertainment, farming, religion, philosophy, the school, and literary topics including "creative" writing paralleling literary works. Also suggested are eight techniques from which composition topics can be generated, the best topics being usually "those which have grown out of the classroom discussions." (DD) |
