Abstract | This book offers inner-city language arts teachers suggestions to make the teaching-learning act more significant and rewarding. The compilation of innovative activities and ideas is divided into six chapters dealing with (1) the improvement of students' self-image, (2) children's literature, (3) written expression, (4) poetry, (5) oral language activities, and (6) critical thinking and language arts. The activities included have all been classroom tested. Each chapter is followed by a list of books and articles on the same subject for further reading matter. Appendices contain (1) three booklists for urban and disadvantaged children, grades K-2, 3-4, and 5-6 and mature readers; (2) a list of award winning children's books; and (3) a list of outstanding volumes of Negro poetry.
