Abstract	Community colleges should be responsive to the shifting needs of society. As in the case of other organizations, however, the ability to initiate and adapt to the necessary changes is dependent on the attitudes and backgrounds of the people in the institution. A primary concern of this study was determining whether junior colleges accept the challenge of responsiveness by selecting flexible staff. According to some organizational thoeorists, faculty who are prone to change are characteristically heterogeneous in background and skills, open to diverse opinions, feel professionally satisfied and rewarded, want to participate in decisions that affect them, and hold attitudes congruent with the purposes and programs of their organization. The purpose of this study was to determine if these traits are more characteristic of the faculty in community college districts with a goal of change than they are of community college faculty nationally. The responses on backgrounds and attitudes were obtained from a study by Medsker of 4098 full-time faculty at 59 community colleges throughout the country, two of which were new and had announced intentions to be innovative. It was concluded that the majority of the colleges were not staffed by faculty prone to change and the two new colleges were no more capable of change through rational planning than were the better established colleges.
