Abstract	To assess the long term prognosis of psychiatric conditions in children, the study followed up 277 cases admitted to the Department of Child Psychiatry, Rikshospitalet, Oslo. Presented is a description of the children based on their case histories, data at the primary examination, and the findings during admission. A social-psychiatric account of the patients' progress and the disease outcomes is given. Also discussed are the individual symptoms and groups of symptoms which were discovered to be relevant in assessing the prognosis of the various psychiatric conditions. Because the patients had been thoroughly investigated when admitted, but had received little or no formal child psychiatric therapy, the information obtained during the study sheds light on the spontaneous outcomes of the patients' psychiatric conditions. Findings are presented in relation to four main groups of patients: neurotic, psychotic, oligophrenic, and handicapped. (KW)
