Abstract | In this report appear the results of a Canadian meeting of experts in the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). One paper offers personal observations on arts education trends and dynamics within the Canadian setting, along with hopes for broader public involvement in--and benefit received from--cultural activities. Another considers the role and function of arts education in trnasmitting and preserving elements from different cultures. UNESCO proceedings also outline and discuss current trends (new mass media, educational innovations, investment in the arts, and others) which affect the relationship between the arts community and the general public. Finally, several UNESCO recommendations are offered: decentralized art education resources and means; well-trained educators and administrators for local centers; UNESCO encouragement of educational research; university level training programs for personnel in arts education; organization of more comprehensive international exchange and cooperation programs; another, more broadly based, UNESCO meeting on arts education; and full publication of pertinent UNESCO documents.
