| Abstract | As seen by Ivan Illich, many cherished elements of modern civilization--aid to developing nations, compulsory formal education, and others--embody artificial mystiques and structure which contribute little to the basic quality of human life. The resulting barriers of certification, class, and distinction harm the poor in particular, denying most of them joy and human dignity without really meeting their pressing physical needs. Illich has expressed his views in articles on well-meaning American aid to developing nations; implications of violent protest, the peculiar religious and cultural position of Puerto Rican Catholics in New York; the decline of the institutional Roman Catholic church in Latin America; the need for fundamental changes in the church's structure and ministry; the role of silence in cross-cultural communication; and the futility of birth control and expanded formal schooling as means of uplifting the underprivileged.
