Abstract | Almost 500 students were involved in this study to determine (1) the kinds of criteria used by high school and college students for critical discrimination of poetry, (2) what changes occurred in the used of these criteria as the students progressed in their education, and (3) the relationship of the study results to the improvement of literary instruction or the re-examination of the curriculum. Student written responses to selected poems formed an important part of the study, while closed and open-ended questionnaires were also used. Results showed an increasing use and sophisticated awareness of the criteria for critical discrimination as students progressed in education, though improvement was not uniform for the various grade levels. Students at all levels were found to use the "meaning" of the poem as the central focus in evaluation and interpretation with the use of other criteria almost inconsequential. (Author/JMC) |
