| Abstract | The three research studies reported explore the idea that the systematic analysis of responses to interracial pictures and pictures of poverty can provide insights that will be useful in understanding and working through interracial and poverty related problems. According to the theory of projective techniques, responses to pictures provide us with rich material on emotions. Osgood's Semantic Differential provides a potential means to analyze these responses. Two theoretical sets of ideas are brought together and also applied to fields of application relevant to social work. Some of the results are: (1) the Semantic Differential pattern of analysis can be applied when slide pictures are used as stimuli; in addition, attitude scales could be developed to masure hard to define attitudes; (2) elicitation and analysis of thematic stories from candid photographic slides of racial and interracial scenes are considered reliable and may have utility in identifying and crudely differentiating racial attitudes; and (3) both subjective analysis and systematic, objective analysis of thematic material are possible; the combined materials are considered to provide rich and objective sources for psychological study.
