Abstract | The purposes of this study were to determine (1) if there are sex differences in language development among children growing up in the deprived conditions of a large city and (2) if there is a significant vocabulary change in these children throughout the Head Start school year. The subjects, 52 girls and 66 boys (3 and 4 years of age) from four Head Start schools in socioeconomically depressed, urban, predominately Negro areas were given the picture vocabulary test of the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale at the beginning and end of the school year. Results showed that more males than females were equal to or above the age norms for vocabulary development, indicating a significant sex difference in vocabulary in favor of the boys. Although a significant change in vocabulary over the school year was evident from the two test scores, the relative difference between the sexes was maintained. (JMC) |
