AbstractA program, Individualized Prescribed Instruction (IPI), designed to permit the individualization of elementary reading is described. The program is divided into four stages: prereading, decoding, transition, and skills development and application. The reading curriculum has been developed by sequencing the specific reading skills that need to be mastered by each youngster. The skills are divided into units and levels of work. The first three stages of the reading program are built around programed texts developed by a commercial publisher. This material is supplemented by special worksheets and record-like discs which are prepared by the research and development center at the University of Pittsburgh. Stage one emphasizes reading readiness and prereading activities. The objective of the decoding stage is to have children translate printed symbols into meaningful sounds. During the transition stage, children move from the programed readers to materials with a traditional format. Skills development and application during directed reading activities are emphasized in stage four. Charts, diagrams, and sample materials are included. (WB)
