Abstract | Intended to provide basic information about the attitudes and behavior of the rural poor, this report summarized data gathered from 9 families living in Michigan's lower peninsula. Selected because their houses and surroundings indicated permanent occupancy by people who were poor, the families were interviewed by 2 college-age women. Responses to 93 questions were taped for later transcription and analysis. The questions provided insight into topics such as (1) why the families lived in the country rather than in the city, (2) how they felt about their socioeconomic situation and lack of mobility, (3) goals for their children and their own personal failures, and (4) their experiences with government and private agencies and private business. Results of the analysis indicated a need for research on (1) the mental health implications of rural poverty; (2) experimental programs to educate, motivate, and train; (3) community development; (4) agencies and agents; and (5) comparative studies. The interview guide for this survey of rural living and community needs is appended. (BD) |
