AbstractThis study investigated six clerical training programs in which women 35 and older participated in Fresno, California, to determine if the programs helped these women in making an entry or reentry into the white collar labor force. It also sought to develop a profile of women who participated in the training programs so that the results would provide direct, descriptive information for those engaged in the education, job placement, and employment of older women. Findings indicated that the typical participant in the Fresno programs was 44 years of age; married; the mother of two or three children whose median age was 17; and a high school graduate; and had not held a clerical job but had worked steadily at some kind of employment for at least one year. Out of the 58 women interviewed, only 27.6% obtained clerical jobs during or after their training. However, training did make contributions toward eventual employability for many of the women.
