AbstractMotion pictures are not simply pictures that move. Instead, they involve a range of symbols, each of which has a somewhat unique function in the communication of meaning. The power of motion pictures lies in the range of symbols that can be employed and in the degree of their integrated expression of meanings. We can improve the effectiveness of motion pictures in instructional communication when we understand the function of pictures, language and musical symbols, and develop skills in using these symbols both uniquely and in reinforcing patterns as appropriate; for instruction is the arrangement and administration of learning situations. The effectiveness of instruction may be expected to improve when learning situations are arranged and administered so that basic principles of learning are in operation. Thus proper use of symbols can give an instructional film tone, context, novelty, opportunities for audience identification, and a feeling left with the audience of the necessity for further personal effort in order to achieve closure. More research and experimentation are needed so that instructional films will at least not violate principles of learning. (MM)
