Abstract | Counselors must be sensitized to the perspectives of minority youth and parents and have an understanding of their aspirations, needs and fears. These perspectives should include: (1) a broader background in social psychology, (2) an understanding of one's own attitudes and sensitivity training. (3) a greater understanding of the cultural contributions of ethnic groups and group work, (4) additional knowledge of measurement and research, including a review of pre- and in-service training as they pertain to understanding disadvantaged minority youth, (5) more selective screening in choosing applicants for counseling, (6) a greater understanding of the world of work for different groups, (7) more involvement in the evaluation of the instructional program to consider the relevancy of the curriculum for disadvantaged youth, and (8) an increase of commitment to action and involvement with community groups and agencies.
