| Abstract | Various factors of the classroom environment that can contribute to a more complete learning atmosphere are explored. The author presents a review of certain research findings that may serve as guidelines in the development of an environmentally coordinated classroom. The importance of providing a classroom which promotes a multisensory approach to instruction is suggested. Among those factors discussed are--(1) visual scanning, (2) the visual field, (3) color, (4) lighting, and (5) seating. Also included are separate sections concerning guidelines for the design of integrated acoustical and thermal environments. In conclusion it is urged that the schoolhouse should provide its occupants with stimuli which are diverse yet within permissible parameters of a coordinated classroom. Administrators, teachers, and in particular, designers, should acquaint themselves with the results of environmental research in order to produce this integration. (RH) |
