| Abstract | This paper outlines problems which are central to the psychological foundations of mathematics. Discussed are the relations that exist between psychological and classical foundations of mathematics. It is shown how the inadequacies of current learning theories which account for complex mathematics learning may be made explicit for appropriate application of Padoa's principle. Topics that are given central consideration in this paper are those of abstraction, imagery, and algorithms. The most detailed discussion is devoted to the learning of the arithmetic algorithms. In addition various algorithms that may be used to learn simple addition facts are outlined, and the results of an experiment testing one of these models are reported. The paper concludes with the discussion of an experiment which used a computer-based teletype and which was concerned with the commutative, associative, and distributive laws of arithmetic. (RP) |
