AbstractDesigned for use in third-grade classes, this teacher text presents the first step in a sequential Japanese language program for elementary school children (see also ED 019 666 and AL 001 743 and 744). The complete series will include eight volumes to be covered in four years, at which time the students should be ready to join the second level in the secondary school using "Learn Japanese--Secondary School Text, Volume III." The 15 lessons in this text generally follow an audiolingual approach, beginning with short conversational exchanges "in a natural setting familiar to the pupils." The pattern practice section which follows gives examples of drills (recognition, repetition, substitution, response, chain, and expansion) which are suitable for elementary pupils. Also included are suggested classroom activities and notes for the teacher on Japanese culture, structural points, and pronunciation. The standard spoken language of the Tokyo area is used throughout, written in Roman characters. Tapes, slides, and other audiovisual materials are also being developed to accompany this text. The course is currently being field tested and will be revised before publication for the general public. For further information on the project, write to Mrs. Esther M. T. Sato, Director, Japanese Language Project, College of Education, Wist Hall Annex 2 (Room 128), 1776 University Avenue, Honolulu, Hawaii 96822. (JD)
