Abstract | This handbook, based on an integrated linguistic analysis of the English language, was designed to provide high school students with a greater insight into the structures and patterns of English. (See related document AL 001 320 for a description of the Buffalo English Linguistics Project.) The seven units of Volume I, which are intended to cover the first semester of the school year, treat the following areas--(1) the general concepts of linguistics and culture, and the scientific approach to their study, (2) the development of language, English and its dialects, English as a world language, and the study of English, (3) English phonology, based on an aspectual analysis, (4) paralanguage and kinesics, (5) oral communication, (6) morphophonics, and (7) morphemics. A general pre-test, included in the student's preface, tests the student's knowledge of English as it is traditionally presented in the areas of spelling, puctuation, parts of speech, and sentence parts. Further tests and quizzes are included in all the units. This volume is followed by Volume Two for the second semester (see AL 001 319). (AMM) |
