AbstractIN ORDER TO DISCOVER IF PUPILS COULD ARRIVE AT THEIR OWN RULES OR GENERALIZATIONS FROM DRILL (THUS SUGGESTING THAT TIME BE SPENT MORE PROFITABLY IN ADDITIONAL PRACTICE THAN IN EXPLANATION), FOUR DIFFERENT METHODS WERE TESTED. FOUR FRENCH AND FOUR SPANISH HIGH SCHOOL CLASSES WERE SUBJECTED TO EXPLANATIONS (1) BEFORE THE DRILL, (2) AFTER THE INITIAL INTRODUCTION OF THE MATERIAL, (3) AFTER THE DRILL, OR (4) WITHHELD IN FAVOR OF ADDITIONAL DRILL. DRILLS WERE TAPERECORDED AND WRITTEN TESTS WERE ADMINISTERED AFTERWARDS AS CRITERION MEASURES. APTITUDE MEASURES WERE USED AS COVARIATES IN ORDER TO ESTABLISH RELATION OF APTITUDE WITH TREATMENTS, AND TO ADJUST CRITERION MEASURES FOR APTITUDE DIFFERENCES BY ANALYSIS OF COVARIANCE. RESULTS INDICATED THAT DIFFERENCES BETWEEN CLASSES WERE GENERALLY MORE IMPORTANT THAN TREATMENT DIFFERENCES. AFTER ADJUSTMENT FOR APTITUDE WAS MADE, SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCES BETWEEN TREATMENTS REMAINED IN ONLY ONE SPANISH AND ONE FRENCH EXPERIMENT. IN THESE TWO EXPERIMENTS, EXPLANATION WAS GIVEN BEFORE THE DRILL OR AFTER THE INITIAL INTRODUCTION OF MATERIAL. THUS THERE IS SOME EVIDENCE THAT EARLY INTRODUCTION OF THE EXPLANATION IS A MORE ADVISABLE TREATMENT THAN ITS POSTPONEMENT. THIS REPORT INCLUDES A DETAILED DISCUSSION OF THE FOUR TREATMENTS, SIGNIFICANT DATA, AND TRANSCRIPTIONS OF THE DRILLS. (AF)
