Abstract | COMMUNITY PROGRESS, INC. A NONPROFIT COMMUITY ACTION CORPORATION WAS ESTABLISHED IN NEW HAVEN CONNECTICUT, IN 1962, WITH A THREE YEAR FORD FOUNDATION GRANT. IT HAS UNDERTAKEN PROGRAMS OF EMPLOYMENT, EDUCATION, AND SOCIAL SERVICES, EMPHASIZING INVOLVEMENT WITH THE POOR ON A CLOSE, INFORMAL, NEIGHBORHOOD BASIS. SOCIAL, VOCATIONAL, HEALTH, EDUCATIONAL, LEGAL, AND RECREATIONAL NEEDS ARE SERVED BY COMMUNITY SCHOOLS OPEN 14 TO 16 HOURS DAILY, AND BY NEIGHBORHOOD CENTERS. MAJOR ACTIVITIES CONDUCTED INCLUDE MIDDLE-SKILL TECHNICAL TRAINING, FUNDAMENTAL EDUCATION, GENERAL VOCATIONAL TRAINING, COUNSELING FOR ADULTS AND RECENT SCHOOL DROPOUTS, AND CULTURAL ENRICHMENT FOR PRESCHOOL AND SCHOOL CHILDREN.
