Abstract | A FIELD STUDY OF THE ELECTOMECHANICAL TECHNICIAN OCCUPATION WAS CONDUCTED IN TWO STAGES. IN THE FIRST PHASE, PERSONAL INTERVIEWS WERE CONDUCTED IN 26 INDUSTRIAL ORGANIZATIONS SELECTED BY SIZE, PRINCIPAL ACTIVITY, AND GEOPGRAPHICAL DISTRIBUTION. IN THE SECOND PHASE, A BRIEF QUESTIONNAIRE WAS USED TO OBTAIN A BROAD SAMPLE OF THE QUANTITATIVE NEED FOR ELECTROMECHANICAL TECHNICIANS. IN GENERAL, THE STUDY SUCCEEDED IN ITS MAJOR OBJECTIVES OF IDENTIFYING OCCUPATIONAL AND EDUCATIONAL NEEDS IN THE NEW AND EMERGING OCCUPATION OF ELECTROMECHANICAL TECHNOLOGY. THE RESULTS OF THE STUDY INDICATED A CLEAR AND PRESSING NEED FOR EXPERIMENTATION AND INNOVATION IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF TECHNICAL EDUCATION FOR NEW AND EMERGING OCCUPATIONS. THE EVIDENCE POINTED TO A SPECIFIC NEED FOR NEW TRAINING PROGRAMS IN ELECTROMECHANICAL TECHNOLOGY. THE INFORMATION OBTAINED WAS USED TO PREPARE A BASIC CURRICULUM PLAN FOR A 2-YEAR, POST-HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAM IN ELECTROMECHANICAL TECHNOLOGY. THE CURRICULUM IS PRESENT IN PART II OF THIS REPORT.
