AbstractA NATIONWIDE SURVEY WAS CONDUCTED OF FOREIGN LANGUAGE ENROLLMENTS AND OFFERINGS IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS. DATA WERE GATHERED FROM STATE SUPERVISORS, CONSULTANTS, AND SCHOOL PRINCIPALS VIA QUESTIONNAIRE. THE COVERAGE INCLUDED PUBLIC, NONPUBLIC, AND PAROCHIAL SCHOOLS. DATA WERE TABULATED AND DESCRIBED. THE DESCRIPTIONS INCLUDED FOREIGN LANGUAGE COURSE (1) ENROLLMENTS FROM 1958 THROUGH 1962, (2) COMPARISONS, (3) PERCENTAGES, (4) OFFERINGS, (5) ENROLLMENT CONTINUITY, (6) DATA FROM PUERTO RICO, GUAM, AND THE VIRGIN ISLANDS, AND (7) COLLATED DATA ON THE OVERALL SAMPLE. THE INCREASE IN MODERN FOREIGN LANGUAGE ENROLLMENTS BETWEEN 1958 AND 1962 WAS SHOWN TO EXCEED THE RATE OF INCREASE IN HIGH SCHOOL POPULATION (86.7 PERCENT TO 25.2 PERCENT). OTHER FINDINGS WERE THAT (1) FROM 1961 TO 1962, ENROLLMENTS INCREASED 21.2 PERCENT IN RUSSIAN, 15.5 PERCENT IN GERMAN, 12.1 PERCENT IN FRENCH, AND 8.3 PERCENT IN SPANISH, AND (2) IN 1962 MOST POPULAR MODERN LANGUAGES WERE (IN ORDER) FRENCH, GERMAN, RUSSIAN, SPANISH, ITALIAN, HEBREW, JAPANESE, POLISH, AND PORTUGUESE.
