AbstractThis article is about how language teaching methodology can help when it comes to associating language learning and content. If literature is seen as content, it can be dealt with in the same way as any other content, such as specialised content in the field of English for Specific Purposes where the specialist for the content works hand in hand with the language teacher. From this perspective we postulate that the most reliable and efficient way to deal with teaching how to teach literature is by combining the skills of a specialist in literature and those of a specialist in language teaching. The former is to deal with the specific genres and discourses of the speciality; the latter is to offer various techniques most likely to appeal to learners at a secondary school level, which enable them to understand what literature is. We will examine the implications such a stand may have on teaching and learning English while taking into account recent research in both fields.
