Abstract | The technical media of gramophone record, broadcasting and television function very effectively as music educators. On the other hand institutionalized musical education in public schools has much less influence. Until today we have a lack of information about the systematic tendencies of musical offers made by the music media and how people use them. This investigation focuses its interest on the medium communicators responsible for musical programs. Their position in the hierarchy of the big record companies and radio stations and their functions at their highly specialized working place are not without consequence for the program and for the aims of the communication process between media and consumers. One result of the study lies in the rejection of established communication theories: no longer an one-line-communication from the communicators to the consumers via technical media can be supposed. In reality there are two circles of communication which are connected only moderately: one circle in the mass medium institution ending with the emitted programs, and another circle in the social group of consumers ending at the loudspeakers and the TV-screens. The systematic tendencies in the musical offers have two main reasons: first in the professionalizing of the editing of musical programs, secondly in the intern system of social gratification by which the actions of communicators are ruled.
