Abstract | This comparative study attempts to describe cultural features of teaching music in Sweden and Germany. The aim is to create a space for reflection on cultural patterns of thinking. The comparison is based on focused interviews with music teachers and music teacher educators. The interviews were conducted in Sweden and Germany and were stimulated by short video footages of music lessons from both countries. By analysing the data, we could reconstruct and contrast implicit beliefs on teaching music. In Sweden, lesson planning, instruction and the evaluation of teaching are strongly oriented towards the curriculum. This is accompanied by a deeply ingrained student-centered pedagogy. The German interviews conducted in the school type Gymnasium show the significance of didactical reflections about contents and aims of music lessons rooted in a notion of Allgemeinbildung (general education).
