AbstractThis chapter focuses on the possibilities and limitations of reconstructing learning processes based on videography of classroom interactions. Given the plurality of epistemological interest, subject specific perspectives, and methodologies used in classroom research, this chapter does not claim that there is only one method for analyzing teaching and learning processes. Even though the beginnings of classroom videography can be dated back to the 1950s, there is still the methodological question of if and how one can gain insight into learning processes. Every methodological approach using video to analyze learning processes has to face the challenge that individual learning processes – understood as mental processes of integrating new experiences through self-reflection – are inaccessible for observation from the outside. Given that, the chapter focuses on a perspective that asks how the participants organize their classroom communication under the premise that they use communication to (re)present teaching and learning processes. Therefore, the chapter focuses on the reconstructive, interpretative work on documented interaction and communication processes. Generally, this introduced procedure takes a cue from sociological approaches of ethnography, ethnomethodology, interaction analysis, and conversation analysis, but if one feels a need to label this approach more precisely, it might also be reasonable to consider it as a primarily ethnomethodological reconstruction.
